Why is water so important?

Water is an important part of our body’s makeup. Without regular hydration we can become depleted of the water levels our bodies crave. As our bootcamp sessions aim to get you sweating, it is essential that our members are clued up on the importance of hydration and its benefits.

Why do we need water?

Water is responsible for over half of our body weight . As a result it constantly requires topping up to ensure all bodily processes run the way they’re supposed to. The amount of fluid lost from the body depends on both the activity levels of the individual and environmental temperature and humidity. With the temperature being in the 20’s at the moment and the intensity of our sessions, it is more important than ever that members are ensuring they are suitably hydrated. This is why we insist that members bring water bottles to every session!

Our bodies are made up of 45% to 60% water, with this varying depending on the muscle and fat proportions of a person. This is due to muscle consisting of 80% water compared to fat containing just 20%.

Every day, the water we drink is lost via a number of routes:

  • 60% flows through the kidneys and is passed as urine
  • 20% is lost through perspiration
  • 12% is lost through breathing
  • 8% is lost through the digestion process

This means that in order to keep this amount of fluids in the body, water losses need to be matched by water gain.

Water and exercise

During the bootcamp sessions, exercising increases our muscular work, so the demand for oxygen increases. Three quarters of muscular activity is lost as heat. To maintain our body temperature, as we know, perspiration is increased and we get out of breath as our bodies try to supply more oxygen to the muscles. It has been shown that as little as a 2% loss of body mass through dehydration can significantly impair performance.

The dangers of dehydration

Failure to regularly top up our fluid levels can result in dehydration. This can have an impact on the whole body. As our blood is made up of 92% water, dehydration can result in a reduction of blood volume causing the body to work harder to pump the blood and oxygen around our bodies. As a result, exercise can feel a lot harder as there isn’t enough oxygen reaching the muscles. Therefore, the body is finding it difficult to regulate itself at rest, nevermind when you’re doing 50 sit-ups!  If you continue to dehydrate, your performance will steadily decrease and you may feel nauseous, weak, light headed and dizzy.

Many of us think that when we feel thirsty it is the body telling us that we need to drink or we will become dehydrated. In fact, feeling thirsty is a sign that we are already a little dehydrated. This is because during exercise, our thirst mechanisms tend to become surpressed. This is why we must drink before, during and after exercise rather than wait until we feel thirsty.

How water helps to lose weight

Not many people realise that drinking water can increase weight loss. The process of the liver converting our stored fat into usable energy requires sufficient water intake. Water also naturally suppresses the appetite and helps proper food digestion. Drinking more water naturally speeds up our metabolism.

So bootcampers, if you want to look and feel good, don’t forget to take your water bottles to your session and make them LARGE!
